BRP Sarangani hull 6177 enters PCG Mindanao service after Kinmen transfer
Foundation says the refurbished former Taiwan CG123 is commissioned for Mindanao route security, SAR and training under pennant 6177.
TAIPEI —
A decommissioned Taiwan Coast Guard Kinmen-class hull entered Philippine Coast Guard service on 2 October 2026 as BRP Sarangani with pennant number 6177, according to We Protect Our Seas Foundation notices carried by Central News Agency and Focus Taiwan. The foundation said the former CG123 was refurbished at no cost to the Philippine government before the in-service milestone. Focus Taiwan English follow-up on 3 October matched the foundation commissioning language and Mindanao deployment description.
Tasking described for the cutter centres on Mindanao shipping-route security, search and rescue, humanitarian assistance and disaster response, marine environmental protection and training rather than northern Luzon fisheries enforcement. Coverage lists the hull at about 61 metres by 11.7 metres with roughly 688 tonnes full-load displacement, consistent with the 500-tonne-class Kinmen design Taiwan completed in 2008 before years of coast-guard service and later retirement.
Foundation president Jeffrey Ordaniel said December 2025 talks led to a 21 September handover after months of coordination around Manila One China sensitivities and privately funded refurbishment. He thanked Taiwan Ocean Affairs Council Minister Kuan Bi-ling, National Security Council Secretary-General Joseph Wu, deputy secretaries-general Wen Lii and Vincent Chao, and Taiwan representative Wallace Chow among others for completing the transfer without putting costs on the Philippine budget.
Ordaniel told CNA he expects Sarangani priority work to stay on Mindanao maritime routes and environmental security, addressing Taiwanese concerns that a donated cutter might later be used against Taiwanese fishing boats. That assurance aligns with earlier Ocean Affairs Council statements on fisher safeguards and possible return clauses if a recipient breached agreed civilian uses of the hull.
The commissioning milestone is operational rather than legislative: it marks the donated hull flying a PCG ensign after September donation paperwork, separate from Taipei debates that attached fisher-protection conditions to the gift. For both coast guards, the episode adds a tangible asset and a political signal of maritime cooperation across the Luzon Strait without creating a formal defence alliance between Taipei and Manila.
Whether Sarangani Mindanao patrol pattern later expands into joint drills or information-sharing with Taiwanese cutters will depend on Manila diplomatic constraints and Taipei willingness to keep coast-guard diplomacy as the preferred channel. AIS tracks and PCG tasking notices will be the practical test of whether the Mindanao-centric mission profile described at commissioning holds after the Oct. 2-3 announcements.
Together the CNA Manila dispatch and Focus Taiwan follow-up fix the record that pennant 6177 is now an in-service Philippine Coast Guard platform derived from Taiwan former Kinmen-class CG123. Regional watchers will also watch whether the foundation continues to publicise training or SAR milestones involving the hull as it settles into southern district rotations alongside other PCG assets.
